Seems an Odd Time

It’s just after two a.m.  I’m starting to get sleepy.  I’ve just brushed my teeth, hoping it won’t wake me too much.  As I step out of the bathroom and back into the bedroom, I hear it — a whippoorwill singing it’s lonely sounding call of a song.  It seems a very odd time of day for it to be singing.  I’m used to hearing them at dusk.  This one is very close to the house and very loud.  Of course the moon is pretty full, so they may be somewhat fooled by the bright light.  The sound of a whippoorwill always, without fail, makes me think of my father.  It stops as suddenly as it started.  Maybe it realized it was time to sleep after all.
