I found out many years ago that one reason I have migraines is that I’m allergic to beef. After eating no beef at all for several years, I remembered that my friend Marianne, had told me that I might be able to eat it again after a few years. So, I started to experiment. I really love hamburgers and I missed getting to eat them. OK, I’ll admit it, I craved hamburgers, pretty much all the time!
So, I started by eating an occasional burger in Oklahoma when I could find one listed on a restaurant menu that said it was made from beef that was free of hormones and such. Deep down, I think it’s the stuff they put in beef nowadays that I’m really allergic to and not actually the beef itself. I did get a headache the first time I had a beef burger again, but it wasn’t a migraine. That was enough to give me hope! Enough hope that I have them fairly often now. I’ve tried them at several different places, with only one migraine as a result.
Saturday I picked up my momma and we went to the Hippy Hut in Gun Barrel for lunch. Don’t go there if you’re in a hurry. I think they only have one cook working, no matter what time of day or what day of the week it is. It will take a while for your food to arrive. That’s really not a big problem though because it will give you time to look over everything. The outside and inside of the building are highly decorated in rock and roll photos and memorabilia. I also love their use of purple and lime green in the décor. They have an oxygen bar and they sell wheat grass, but I haven’t tried either of those.
Mom got the soft tacos — one chicken taco and two beef this time. She said the chicken was good, but not as good as the beef. I got the hamburger — with lettuce, tomato, purple onion, pickles, American cheese and mustard on a Kaiser roll. It’s a dog gone good burger and the fries are good too. I’ve read about this “slow food” movement in the US, that I always think of when I go to the Hippy Hut. I think the “slow food” is supposed to refer to home cooking, but this tastes like home cooking to me, so I think it fits.
As we were leaving, I took the photo of the outside of the building. Did you notice the gentleman waving to us as he walked up to the door? I also got a shot of the frog! Someday, I’m going to get me a frog similar to this one. There’s a shop right down the street from the Hippy Hut that sells all kinds of metal yard art animals. I’d like a trio of frogs for my yard. Sounds fun to me.
Hope you enjoyed seeing a bit of Gun Barrel today.
